How Many Drinks Does It Take to Get to .08 BAC?

A number of factors determine the number of drinks it takes before you can be convicted of drunk driving in Michigan. Those factors include the amount of alcohol in your drink, your weight and when you consumed the drinks. It takes time both for alcohol to enter your blood stream and to be cleared.

Here are some rough guidelines for drivers of different weights who consumed one or more drinks in the past couple of hours. A drink is either 1.5 ounces of hard liquor, five ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer:

For a teen weighing 120 pounds

  • One drink will put you over the legal limit of .02 BAC

For a teen weighing 180 pounds

  • Two drinks will put you over the legal limit of .02 BAC

For a commercial driver weighing 180 pounds

  • Three drinks will put you over the legal limit of .05 BAC

For an adult weighing 140 pounds

  • Four drinks will put you over the legal limit of .08 BAC
  • Eight drinks will put you over the super drunk limit of .17 BAC

For an adult weighing 200 pounds

  • Five drinks will put you over the legal limit of .08 BAC
  • Ten drinks will put you over the super drunk limit of .17 BAC
